چکیده

Abstract. The Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) is the main controller of weather in tropics on intraseasonal timescales, and recent research provides evidence that quasi-biennial (QBO) influences MJO interannual variability. However, physical mechanisms behind this interaction are not completely understood. Recent studies normal-mode structure indicate contribution global-scale Kelvin Rossby waves. In study we test whether these MJO-related normal modes affected by QBO stratospheric ozone. partial directed coherence method was used enabled us to probe direction frequency interactions. It found equatorial ozone zonal winds connected with at periods 1–2 months 1.5–2.5 years. We explore role interactions stratosphere–troposphere coupling performing a linear regression between MJO–QBO indices amplitudes atmosphere obtained projections basis using ERA-Interim reanalysis data. dominated symmetric but also influenced asymmetric modes. mostly explained westward-propagating inertio-gravity waves previous results identifying those concentration. particular, westward waves, associated QBO, influence timescales. modes, such as wind respect Equator, shown have significantly different dynamics during events depending phase QBO.

Effects of the stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation on long-lived greenhouse gases in the troposphere

An analysis is presented of results of an extended integration with a global general circulation model that includes treatment of a long-lived tropospheric trace constituent as well as a momentum source that forces a realistic stratospheric quasibiennial oscillation (QBO). It is shown that the dynamical QBO may modulate stratosphere-troposphere exchange in such a manner as to produce a QBO in g...

The Quasi-biennial Oscillation and annual variations in tropical ozone from SHADOZ and HALOE

We examine the tropical ozone mixing ratio perturbation fields generated from a monthly ozone climatology using 1998 to 2006 ozonesonde data from the Southern Hemisphere Additional Ozonesondes (SHADOZ) network and the 13-year satellite record from 1993 to 2005 obtained from the Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE). The long time series and high vertical resolution of the ozone and temperature...

Observational evidence of the downstream impact on tropical rainfall from stratospheric Kelvin waves

Many studies have shown that stratospheric anomalies can influence tropospheric circulation and convection (e.g. Gray et al. 1992; Ho et al. 2009; Hu et al. 2012; Garfinkel and Hartmann 2011; Huang et al. 2012), and much attention has been paid to the dominant mode of interannual variability of the equatorial stratosphere, i.e., quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) (Yasunari 1989; Baldwin et al. 20...

The Influence of Wave– and Zonal Mean–Ozone Feedbacks on the Quasi-biennial Oscillation

The effects of wave and zonal mean ozone heating on the evolution of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) are examined using a two-dimensional mechanistic model of the equatorial stratosphere. The model atmosphere is governed by coupled equations for the zonal mean and (linear) wave fields of ozone, temperature, and wind, and is driven by specifying the amplitudes of a Kelvin wave and a Rossby–...

Influence of the quasi‐biennial oscillation and El Niño–Southern Oscillation on the frequency of sudden stratospheric warmings

[1] Stratospheric sudden warmings (SSWs) are a major source of variability during Northern Hemisphere winter. The frequency of occurrence of SSWs is influenced by El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the quasi‐biennial oscillation (QBO), the 11 year solar cycle, and volcanic eruptions. This study investigates the role of ENSO and the QBO on the frequency of SSWs using the National Center for At...
